New name for local hockey

The Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association is trying on something new to start this season — a brand new team name that will apply to all levels of local hockey.

As of now, all Pass hockey teams will be known as the Crowsnest Pass Thunder. “We wanted to have the same name right across the board,” says Fred Horbay, president of the Minor Hockey Association. He says that having different names for all the teams made some tournaments more difficult, and made it harder to order track suits and jackets for the coaches and parents at different levels. Many other communities use a uniform naming system as well, he says, something that can promote community spirit and support.

Minor Hockey ran a contest with all of its players to choose the name, and roughly 20 names were submitted. “The board sat down and went through all the names,” says Horbay. “We worked at it for quite a while.” Eventually the Crowsnest Pass Thunder monicker was chosen, as it fits with the annual Thunder in the Valley fireworks show. Horbay says that they wanted something like that, which means something to the entire Pass. “It all ties together. When we’re playing in Calgary or somewhere, everyone will know it’s the Crowsnest Pass Thunder.”

Horbay adds that they will be designing a new logo for the teams, but that the crow will stay. He says that they are working with Chad Petrone of Public Image to add something new to the familiar logo, something that will help tie all the teams together under the new name.
