Bantam Rockies clinch playoff spot

The previous weekend the Southwest Rockies beat the South Central Alberta Bantam AA Hockey League’s south division leaders at home.

On Saturday they travelled to Lethbridge to try it again.

The Rockies came out on fire. The Lethbridge goalie was unbelievable. It wasn’t until the Rockies took advantage of a powerplay that they were able to get one to the back of the net. The puck went to Joel Hoglund at the point, then in to Maverick Price and at the net, then Alex Elliott tucked it in.

Later in the period Price dug the puck out of the corner and found Elliott again. Elliott let the one-timer go for his second of the day.

On a freaky play the home team managed a goal off a crazy bounce off the glass. The Rockies led 2-1 after one.

In the second period it was clear a little of the offensive fire had burned out. Goalie Brady Rouleau was the last man back too many times, but he shut the door and the score remained 2-1 Rockies.

The third period saw Lethbridge even the score, but the Rockies offence wasn’t finished. Cole Rutledge moved the puck from the point to Connor Gross who took the shot and Landen Collings read the bounce off the boards. Collings scooped it and put it away.

From there Rouleau did everything one man can do but wasn’t able to hold them off completely. Lethbridge tied it and then took the lead with just minutes left. The Rockies pressed but weren’t able to score and lost 4-3. On Sunday against Taber Golden Sons it was the Maverick Price show. The only scoring in the first period was when Ashton McLeod put the puck at the net and Mav Price deflected it in.

In the second the relentless pressure continued. The Rockies second goal saw a Rutledge pass to Taylor Wolstenholme and he ripped the puck in for a powerplay marker. Price was a magic show all day. Time and time again he was untouchable with the puck. It was him with a fine finish as he embarrassed the Taber tender off a passing play by McLeod and Wolstenholme. This left the Rockies up 3-0 after two.

In the third period Hoglund quarterbacked the fourth Rockies marker as he found Price, who hit a wide open Wolstenholme. The it was the line of Price, Wolstenholme and Elliott connecting again. The Rockies won 5-0 on a four- point night for Price, Wolstenholme and McLeod.

Next weekend the Rockies wrap up the regular season in Medicine Hat with two games.
