Atoms Thunder advance in Provincial playoffs

Local hockey team scores huge victory to move forward

Pass Herald Staff

The first round of the Provincial “D” playoffs in the Crowsnest Pass got underway last week on January 16th, when the Crowsnest Pass Thunder took to the ice against the Fort Macleod Vipers. It was obvious from the moment the puck was dropped that the Vipers were in way over their heads, suffering a resounding 19-4 thrashing at the hands of the CNP Thunder.

It was clear that the Fort Macleod team was frustrated and overmatched. They were assessed seven penalities including one penalty in the first period, two in the second and three in the third. The penalties called against the Vipers included slashing, tripping, hooking, slashing, tripping and hooking, in that order.

Game Results

Thunder 19 - Vipers 4

The Pass team scored five goals in the first period off the sticks of Treyton Chomyn (assisted by Marc Sciarra), Derek Tarcon (assisted by Garrett Selensky)  Josh Corns (unassisted), Treyton Chomyn (unassisted), and Craig Marshall (unassisted).

In the second period, the Thunder increased their total tally by six goals off the sticks of Jared Koentges (assisted by Marc Sciarra and Treyton Chomyn), Darrien Pinel (assisted by Landon Clarke), Jared Koentges (unassisted), Keiran Douglas (assisted by Landon Clarke), Treyton Chomyn (assisted by Jared Koentges), and Jared Koentges (assisted by Treyton Chomyn and Keynan Megli).

Our local boys ran away with the game in the third period, scoring eight goals as they eliminated the Macleod team from further provincial compeition. Scoring for the Pass in the third period were Darrien Pinel (assisted by Jared Koentges), Derek Tarcon (unassisted), Craig Marshall (assisted by Treyton Chomyn), Darrien Pinel (unassisted), Jared Koentges (assisted by Keenan Fraser), Derek Tarcon (assisted by Marc Sciarra), Jared Koentges (assisted by Treyton Chomyn) and closing out the scoring in the third period was Marc Sciarra (assisted by Jared Koentges).

During the season the Crowsnest Pass was fortunate to have two teams in the Atom division, and both teams went undefeated during league play except for a single loss.

The only loss was by CNP Thunder 2, in a game against CNP Thunder 1 during league play –– their  only loss was against another local team! The series in this playoffs are all two- game total goal series, but if a team wins by ten goals or more in the first game, a second game is not required. As a result of the lop-sided score a return game was unnecessary and the team will now move on to the second round of provincials, scheduled to include a team from either Claresholm or another team in the Atoms from Fort Macleod.

The combined team, representing the Crowsnest Pass, includes the following players –– Morgan Yanco, Darrien Pinel, Marc Sciarra, Craig Marshall, Treyton Chomyn, Jared Koentges, Kyle Farano, Keiran Douglas, Garrett Selensky, Keynan Fraser, Cade Collett, Tyson Grieves, Jean Maritz, Keenan Megli, Shawn Flannery, Josh Corns, Landon Clarke, Derek Tarcon and David Shortreed.

The  combined team entered by the Pass in the provincial playoffs is being coached by Shane Collett and David Shortreed, assisted by Kelly Pinel and Rick Koentges. The Pass team must win two more rounds to advance as the Zone 5 representatives in this year’s provincial games.

Best of luck to the team and to all the players involved!
