Local volunteer recognized as Alberta hits 100 years of hockey

When Pass resident Daryl Ferguson was told that he had been selected for a prestigious and important award from Hockey Alberta, he was a little shocked. But this tireless community volunteer is a worthy recipient of an honour that has been bestowed on only 100 Albertans.

Hockey Alberta recently celebrated a century of hockey in our province by recognizing 100 individuals and organizations who have played a significant role in hockey development in Alberta over that time. A large ceremony was held in Edmonton on Thursday, November 29 for the recipients. “It was quite the do,” says Ferguson, displaying the medal from the ceremony. “To me it was quite an honour. To be in that 100 is a big shock.”

Ferguson has been involved with hockey in one form or another for a large part of his life. He played hockey in Lethbridge, and kept up his interest in the sport when he moved to the Pass in 1972. As part of the Blairmore Minor Hockey Association, Ferguson coached and sat on the executive. He was part of the group that amalgamated all of the local hockey groups into the Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Association in the 70s.

He also officiated as a referee and linesman for nearly 20 years, both with minor hockey and with the Timberwolves when they were still in the community.

He sat on the Crowsnest Pass Minor Hockey Disciplinary Committee for three years, and through his work at the CJPR radio station, helped facilitate play by play coverage of local Red Devils games. Ferguson also once officiated an international semi-pro game in Calgary, which was a great honour for him.

“The biggest thing is getting out there and seeing the kids play,” he says. At the ceremony, Ferguson says he saw many people he remembers from his days with minor hockey––volunteers and builders in Alberta hockey. In addition, famous personalities such as Glen Hall, Dave King, and Ron Lowe were on hand for the event.
