Even the big boys can fall

There is an old saying in the business world that goes something like this: The big boys keep getting bigger and small ones keep getting smaller.

Looking back over the years there seems to be a lot of truth in this old statement.

Only a few decades ago every community in the Crowsnest Pass had one or more grocery stores, movie theaters, butcher shops, shoe makers/repairers, community libraries, ice arenas, banks, men's clothing stores, family clothing and shoe stores and jewelry stores, and there were four town offices.

Soon we will have one less confectionery store in the Crowsnest Pass when the Westend Confectionery in Blairmore closes at the end of January.

Quebecor is one of the largest private companies in the world and owner of numerous newspapers in Canada including the Crowsnest Pass Promoter and the Pincher Creek Echo.

Last week a branch of their company Quebecor World Inc. was granted bankruptcy protection from its creditors by a Quebec superior court. The company owes millions and millions of dollars and is in the process of financially reconstructing the company.

Who said the big get big and the small get smaller? Perhaps there is still room for some of us small businesses in today's world.

At least that's the way I see it.
