Remembrance Day

Last week while in Lethbridge visiting with my sister, Donna, we watched the Remembrance Day Services held in Ottawa. They should have made me feel proud that so many, many men and women fought in many wars so we could have the freedoms we have today and live in a democratic society.

In my opinion, it was a mockery played out by those in power, as I watched them lay wreath after wreath. The only ones I felt were sincere were the veterans and the families of the dead soldiers of today and yesterday.

Can you image paying homage one day, then fighting the fight to settle with the veterans who were used as guinea pigs in 1954 when they were subjected to radiation fallout when the governments in Canada and the USA were testing their nuclear bombs? The United States has settled with those involved in the testing in 1954, but Canada still hasn’t dealt with the issue. I watched tentatively as the wreaths were laid and it brought back memories of last year when I attended the Remembrance Day services held at CCHS and the three legions and all I could think of was how the very next day I watched Global News and witnessed a van being loaded with food from the Veterans Food Bank for those who fought and lived to ensure or freedoms.

   How disgusting.

In my opinion, for what it’s worth, there shouldn’t be a veteran in Canada, young or old, who has to pay any type of tax - they have paid one hundred times over when they fought for their country. But, then again we must always remember that governments at all levels must fill their coffers and pay exorbitant wages and retirement benefits for those who represent us. I guess we’re supposed to feel indebted to these people? Somehow I don’t.

I’ve yet to see a van full of food from any Food Bank being delivered to a politician. I could go on and on forever, but as Buddy always tells me, Editorials are supposed to be short and to the point.

By the way, I talked to Bud the other day and he told me that the Doctor had told him he should stay off work for 6-8 weeks so I guess you’re stuck with me until after Christmas.

Lisa will be off until after Christmas and it looks as though the same goes for Ardyth. Oh well, as the saying goes, “everyone is replaceable” - it may not be the same but I’ve learned the saying is so true. Once you accept the fact that nothing is constant in life you’ve got it made.

So long, see you next week.
