Editorial

Thank you so much everyone

I brought this business in 1952 and have never missed a day of work due to ill health. But 2007 proved to be a deadly year for the Pass Herald management and staff. So this year I will let my business partner Gail write this Editorial, the last one for 2007 We would both like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, and I mean everyone, who supported us during our illnesses, our faithful advertisers and readers, our staff, our carriers – and all those who stretched out their hands and helped us by just inquiring how we were doing - if we have missed anyone, thank you all again.

Let me tell you, it is not hard to say goodbye to 2007 – I’m sure we would like to forget this year. Maybe we can just skip it and pretend it didn’t come at all. We can always pretend we were in another year – a year where things were just hippity hop. Regardless, we have remained an independent business and we are still competing against the “Big Boys” – the Quebecor Group who own the Calgary Sun, Pincher Creek Echo and, the Pass Promoter, just to name a few. This company is the largest printing company in the world, but we are surviving because we are an integral part of the community – I was born and raised in this valley and Gail has been here for over 55 years. We both love this “Garden of Eden”.

Both of us understand that nothing remains constant and changes take place everyday – we have new businesses in the Pass, new residents and weekenders, but we still manage to remain in business. We have, and hopefully will always, have the support of local businesses. I guess you would have to say we have the best of both worlds. We have new young blood in the Pass Herald who always work tirelessly to make sure we focus on the younger generation, and we have older (sometimes tired blood) management and staff to make sure things go according to Hoyle.

I, Bud, would personally like to thank lovely Lisa for all the work she contributes to the Pass Herald, Betty who works so hard and so long and knows what it’s all about, Mike who came in to help while his mother, Ardyth Chambers, is on disability, Willy who has taken over the delivery and circulation of the Pass Herald, Madeline who is one of the best folders we have had in many, many years (her sister was also just as good) and their mother who comes in quite often to help her daughters, Ardyth who came to work for us and has helped us out when we needed her (it’s almost like she took wedding vows when she came to work at the Herald – in sickness and health), John Kinnear who is our steadfast and wonderful feature writer, and last but certainly not least, Nathen, our reporter, who is the wings beneath the feet of the Pass Herald. He has been the one constant in the paper, even when we were all sick at one time or another, he just kept plugging forward, never taking time to look backwards, just straight ahead.

Thank you everyone once again. We both wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in 2008.

Bud and Gail
